How Canva is Stealing Jobs for Graphic Designers

While looking for articles for this week's social media/public relations blog post, I stumbled across one titled "Canva Steals Jobs for Graphic Designer Students", and I couldn't help but write about it. It's only fair that I, a graphic design student, have some input on this. This article comes from The Penman Press, which is the literary magazine for Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). This partly talks about why people should not use Canva for everything and should instead be supporting to their design team on campus. While this article is very directed at convincing people to submit to SNHU's design team instead, I kind of agree with the statement that Canva does steal jobs for graphic designers. I've talked before about how I have previously used Canva for drafts and simple mock-ups, so it's not like I hate Canva. I think it's a great resource for designers. I also think that people who are not designers, should hire a designer for their work instead of using Canva.

Canva is great to figure out layouts and whatnot for designs, but if people don't know basic tools of design and are wanting to create actual graphics for their business or organization they should hire a professional. Without the help of graphic designers, many times a business' graphics will not stand out or accurately portray what they're wanting to communicate. A lot of people think "How hard can it be to slap some text and images together for a logo?" but you have to think about what the graphic needs to communicate and how effectively it's going to communicate an idea beforehand. It's a lot of work! Not to mention most of the good graphics on Canva are going to cost money, so you'll still be paying someone. At that point you may as well hire an actual person to take care of it for you. It will not only save people time, but they'll also have amazing graphics for advertisements, social media, events etc.
